What Is The Value of a Partial Hospitalization Program?

When considering treatment options for substance use disorder (SUD), it’s easy to get lost in all of the acronyms and medical jargon. You may come across the term partial hospitalization program (PHP) in your search, but how do you know if this is the right path for you? If you’re considering a PHP or wondering if a PHP is necessary for your SUD treatment and recovery, read on.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

PHPs are a type of outpatient care for people with SUD. In a PHP, a person is set up with a team of medical, mental health, and addiction professionals to aid them throughout their recovery. They meet with this team during the day and receive treatment at a facility but don’t stay overnight.

This setup can allow clients to maintain the structure of “normal life” by returning home to their loved ones every night while still providing the means to an addiction-free life. Some people with SUD may go directly into a PHP or use it to transition from inpatient to outpatient treatment.

A PHP is a more intensive approach than most outpatient programs and requires time and commitment. Time away from work is usually necessary. Programs like this offer a high level of support without 24-hour supervision and provide easy access to medical attention if needed.

When a Partial Hospitalization Program Is Needed

Substance use issues can sneak up on you. To an extent, it’s a normalized part of society. However, when substance use turns into addiction, it can cause real damage. Your health, relationships, career, and self-image can be deeply affected. It’s important and can be life-saving to know and look out for signs of SUD in yourself and the people you know. Some of these signs include:

  • Substance use causes strain in relationships
  • Frequent legal trouble
  • Neglecting work and family responsibilities
  • Unexplained financial problems
  • Choosing substance use over hobbies or socializing
  • Sudden changes in mood, energy, or personality
  • Changes in appetite or sleep
  • Sudden change in weight

Specific physical symptoms often depend on the substance being used. If you’re facing SUD, reaching out for help can be an empowering first step back to the life you want. Treatment for SUD takes many forms. A PHP can be an effective tool on the road to sobriety. PHPs can provide you with the support and evidence-based treatment that you need. If you or someone you know is experiencing signs of SUD, a PHP could be right for your recovery.

The Value of a Partial Hospitalization Program

PHPs can offer a solution to SUD through a number of benefits, including:

  • Individual and group therapy: In PHP, you’ll work with a therapist both one-on-one and in group settings. This will be an opportunity to learn about your SUD and any co-occurring mental health issues while also forging bonds with others in the same situation.
  • Intense SUD treatment: A PHP requires more time and effort than traditional outpatient treatment. You’ll be committing six hours a day to treatment, putting you on the path to a successful recovery.
  • Daily meetings with professionals: You’ll meet with a range of mental health professionals and addiction specialists each day in PHP. This will provide a comprehensive support team that can meet any of your needs.
  • Highly effective care: PHP offers intense therapy for people facing SUD while still allowing them to live at home. It is an effective and valuable tool on the road to recovery.

You deserve a treatment plan that works for you and your goals. If these benefits sound like they could be helpful to your recovery, a PHP could be right for you.

Moving Forward

A PHP is one of the outpatient services we offer that can help you on your road to recovery. In our PHP, you’ll receive treatment five to six days a week, six hours a day. During this time, you’ll receive support from your assigned therapist or counselor, peer recovery coach (PRC), case management team, and sober community. Our treatment philosophy uses evidence-based practices that emphasize selflessness, emotional vulnerability, and positivity.

If a guest needs a PHP level of care, their SUD is severe enough that their work needs to be put on hold so they can focus on treatment. Taking time away from work, family, and friends can seem like a tall order, but it could be necessary for the sake of your mental and physical health. If you decide you’re ready to take that step, we’re ready to help.
